A little distraction can be a wonderful thing.

Nate Torrance has a job to do, and the biggest rugby boots in the world to fill. He can't afford to lose his focus, especially not to a brown-eyed Canadian who pushes all his buttons and looks much too good in a climbing harness.

Allison Villiers may not know what she wants to do with her life, but she's clear about one thing. She's not impressed by the new captain of the All Blacks, however big a deal he is to the rest of New Zealand. If only her unfortunate taste for adventure didn't keep leading her astray...

Note This romance, like New Zealand, contains some steam. If that isn't your cuppa, you may want to visit some other country... er, audiobook.

Just My Luck Escape to New Zealand Book 5 (Audible Audio Edition) Rosalind James Claire Bocking Rosalind Iiams Books

I've come to realize I read Rosalind James's books for basically the same reason I read thriller novels: I'm an escapism junkie. I'll basically read anything I can get emotionally caught up in, whether it's somebody racing to find a 20-megaton terrorist nuke or the kind of heart-swelling, oh-damn-I'm getting-tears-in-my-eyes climaxes James specializes in. She does villains and creeps very well (see also her set-in-America book "Welcome to Paradise"), but her principal characters, while far from flawless, are always the kind of smart, likeable, resilient people who DESERVE to be happy, which is what I like in my romances. And the cool thing about this one is that there are two storylines with two different couples, and you find yourself pulling hard for both of them to have that happy ending. Do they, ultimately? Ah, I can't tell you that! But man, I enjoyed this book. And as usual, I learned some fascinating stuff about New Zealand. As for the bedroom scenes, they're, um, entirely effective (They were for me, anyway. I like realistic sex, like I like realistic plots & characters. If it's not believable, what's the point?). Anyway, to summarize: An excellent read, one I'll be keeping among my Kindle "re-readables."

Just My Luck Escape to New Zealand Book 5 (Audible Audio Edition) Rosalind James Claire Bocking Rosalind Iiams Books Reviews

I highly recommend Just My Luck by Rosalind James to anyone looking for a good romance novel with realistic characters and situations or anyone looking for a story about people going through challenging transitional periods in a fun way in New Zealand in all its lively and culturally rich glory.

This book features two plots developing side by side and revolving around roommates Ally and Kristen. The two women are very different and likeable. Ally is figuring out her life and what she wants to do with it. She is spontaneous, passionate, and dedicated person. She meets Nate who is by the books and very driven. I really enjoyed reading about their relationship and the challenges they faced. It seemed very realistic. Also, I found the character developments and challenges revolving around her career to be equally engaging. Her roommate Kristen is recently divorced and facing different issues trusting herself and romantic partners. Her romantic counterpart Liam himself has been through personal issues as well and is perfect for great character developments and dialogue between the two. He really is the most steadying character in the entire book, and it feels that way for the reader too.

Just My Luck, like several of the books in this series, is about physically active women. The way James writes about physical activity, particularly in this book, is empowering and is really encouraging to the reader/listener to go out there and exercise or to get outside. It would make a great audio companion for exercise that permits listening to an mp3 player. I don't mean to suggest that reading this book is like reading a romance book by Jillian Michaels though, its just an aspect of the book that is thoughtfully and very well done, and one I appreciate as I try to keep working out as a regular part of my schedule.

More than any other of Rosalind James's Escape to New Zealand books, I have thought about the best way to read this book. Like the rest of the series, you can read this book easily as a stand alone and enjoy it without worrying about getting lost. Ideally, of course, in a series you read them in order in order to understand additional background and appreciate the cameos of characters from previous books. Its not really a spoiler to say that in this book Nate takes over the All Blacks captaincy for the retiring Drew. Even as a reader, and even with Drew and Nate being fictional characters, I found I did have some loyalties to the retired captain when I first read this book when it came out. Listening to it some time later, I found it easier to enjoy the story and to get into Nate's character and to appreciate the story for the great book it is. If you are someone that like me, gets attached to characters, I would recommend putting some time between starting this book and finishing books 1 and 2 (the ones with the most Drew). You have all the background of why Nate has big shoes to fill, but it is (at least for me) much easier to like Nate as a character.

I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. I was not compensated for my review, and I was not required to write a positive review. The opinion expressed here is my own.
I love Rosalind James’s writing. She is quick, witty and her characters are all so different. They are flawed yet relatable. I also love the New Zealand/rugby angel, both of which I now have a big interest in, just because of her books. I LOVE this about the series. I get to travel to New Zealand without the long plane ride. Just my Luck had so much story it could have been 2 books. In fact, I wish it had been.
One story follows Allison and new captain of the all Blacks Nate (Toro) and the other Kristen and Liam (Mako).
Allison and Nate- She moved to EnZed after 6 years with a man who just let her go. She is now working in a male dominated climbing gym. Nate is the new captain of the All Blacks and is feeling the pressure. They hike and do other outdoorsy things and they spar with each other and make hot, steamy love. Really they have sex because he won’t commit to loving her (Rugby is his focus) which, even though she denies it, is a huge problem for her. There are other sleazy men in the story and you really hate one of them and Allison isn’t smart bout him, but one thing for Ms. James’s books no one is an angel. Quick wit,
Kristen is taking a year of celibacy and Liam is a recovering alcoholic. I wanted to know more about them and they are there but not enough. Kristen is the beautiful sister of Hannah from Book 1 but she has panic attacks that we only hear about once. I feel like Liam, who was my favorite of the book, was left out in the cold a bit. His back story is given, by him, but I wanted to know more! He is kind, wise and really the best character of the book.
I found it a bit tougher to switch between the 4 characters in audiobook especially because Nate and Liam both had nicknames. I think I retain the nicknames better when I read than when I am listening. Ms. Booking did a great job of creating the different voices; I just found that I had to listen carefully at the beginning of the chapter to see which character we were following.
These books are well worth the time and I am a huge fan. I am so glad I found this author!
